The Best Places in WNY to Walk, Talk, and Recharge (Without Spending a Dime!)
One of my proudest moments this year? Starting a Walk Squad! It all began on one of those days—a long stretch of work, kids home for summer, and a desperate need for anything that didn’t involve the word “Mom.” So, I reached out to a few friends, and surprisingly, many were in the same boat—looking for a way to reconnect and get outside. And just like that, our weekly Walk Squad was born.
What started as a simple way to get fresh air turned into something way more special: meaningful connections, mental clarity, and a ton of fun. If you're looking for a low-cost way to hang out with friends while getting some exercise, here are some of our favorite walking spots.
1. Stiglmeier Park (Depew, NY)
A hidden gem for anyone near Erie County! With scenic trails through woods and open fields, this park offers a peaceful, nature-filled walk just outside Buffalo. Perfect for those who want to clear their mind and enjoy a bit of fresh air.
2. Buffalo Outer Harbor
This hidden gem along Lake Erie offers stunning views of the water and the city skyline. It’s perfect for a peaceful stroll by the water.
3. Tifft Nature Preserve
For a more wooded experience, head to Tifft. The trails here are serene and perfect for birdwatching or enjoying nature without leaving the city.
4. West Seneca Soccer Park
Known for its sports fields, this park also has a lovely loop trail, ideal for a relaxed walk or wildlife spotting.
5. Knox Farm State Park
Get lost in nature at Knox Farm! The park has vast open spaces, rustic trails, and ponds—perfect for a peaceful escape close to home.
6. Eternal Flame Falls
For the more adventurous, the hike to Eternal Flame Falls offers a unique reward: a small waterfall with a natural gas spring beneath it that creates a little flame at the base.
7. Chestnut Ridge Park
With trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes, Chestnut Ridge offers some of the best views in the area, plus the iconic Eagle’s Nest overlook.
8. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens
If you're looking for a peaceful walk without entering the gardens, the pathway outside the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is perfect. This scenic trail winds around beautiful views of the surrounding landscape
Final Thoughts
Starting the Walk Squad has been one of the best parts of my year. Not only did it help me get out of the house, but it’s also brought me closer to friends and nature. Whether you’re looking for a short stroll or a more adventurous hike, these spots are perfect for your next walk. So, grab your sneakers, bring a friend, and explore! You never know what you might discover right outside your doorstep.
